After a series of freak storms blasted thousands of tons of sand from the beaches of Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales, locals were shocked to discover a bizarre and surreal landscape of ancient, skeletal trees dating back roughly four thousand years.

According to The Guardian, the forest of pine, oak and birch trees once extended for many miles across the swampland, between what are now the towns of Borth and Ynyslas. Climate change and rising seas are believed to have submerged the forest thosands of years ago, gradually burying it in moss and sediment.

Local legends about a lost kingdom called Cantre'r Gwaelod may have grown out of stories passed down about the buried forest; recently exposed human footprints and man-made structures in the area dating between 3000 and 4000 years old suggest those legends may be partially based on fact.
