New Still, More Directors Announced for 'The Profane Exhibit'

$

The Profane Exhibit is a film which I am eagerly awaiting. An anthology of extreme horror, The Profane Exhibit marks Ruggero Deodato's (Cannibal Holocaust) first directorial project in almost a decade. We are one short closer to release, as Marian Dora's (Zombie Nation, Cannibal) segment, "Mors in Tabula" wraps. Sneak a peek with this still:

In "Mors in Tabula," a middle-aged woman suffering from incurable cancer is offered an operation that could be her "last chance." But the surgeon has only his own desires in mind...

Other directors signed on to The Profane Exhibit include Michael Todd Schneider (August Underground's Mordum), Andrey Iskanov (Philosophy of a Knife, Visions of Suffering), Ryan Nicholson (Famine, Grave Encounters 2), special effects makeup artist Sergio Stivaletti (Cemetary Man, The Stendhal Syndrome), Coffin Joe (Awakening of the Beast, A Capital dos Mortos), Richard Stanley (Hardware, The Theatre Bizarre), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Dead Sushi, The ABCs of Death), Uwe Boll (Bloodrayne, In the Name of the King), and Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, The ABCs of Death).

The official synopsis:

"Deep within the underbelly of Paris, there is a club which is the home of a secret, wicked society. At first it resembles an ordinary fetish or goth nightclub, but hidden within the cavernous building are many hidden rooms. One of which is known as “The Room of Souls,” a private gathering place of the world’s richest and most evil people. Their host is the elegant yet frightening Madame Sabatier. For their amusement, each member takes a turn and spins a true tale of their depravity: A good wife learns that her husband goes out at night to abduct and murder young women; A botched suicide attempt leads to a drug induced dream; A girl is believed to be possessed by a demon and her overly religious parents enlist the help of a corrupt reverend who has his own sinister plans; We are invited inside the deranged mind of a respected surgeon as he takes us on a guided tour of life, death, and everything in between; A young street prostitute crosses paths with a charismatic flesh trader and is forced to take an unspeakable journey of sex, violence, and murder; A nun is abducted off the streets of Rome and held captive for over a year turning her into a feral, murderous creature to be unleashed on society; A chance encounter on a fateful bus ride for an unsuspecting girl who dreams of riches and fame is her undoing; A man picks up a woman in a nightclub and soon finds himself at the mercy of a cult of women who believe consumption of their sacrifice will bring them to their highest form of female dominance; An unflinching look into darkest Africa where human life is traded for fortune and the most unspeakable atrocities are committed. It truly is a profane world, and this is THE PROFANE EXHIBIT. There are no boundaries."

Ready for the first bit of True Blood casting news? Yeah you are. Joining season six as a regular is Rob Kazinsky. The British actor is best known for his role in EastEnders and will be seen in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Pacific Rim.

In True Blood, Kazinsky will play a faerie named Ben, and guess what? He and Sookie will "take a liking" to each other. What else is new. Apparently Ben will also help Sookie and Jason delve deeper into the mystery of who killed their parents.

Maria Bello Joins Untitled James Wan Project

Actress Maria Bello has signed on to star in the upcoming, untitled James Wan thriller. One can only hope it's not the MacGyver movie. (I know, it's not.)

Wan is producing the thriller, directed by Will Canon (Brotherhood) and written by Max La Bella (Children's Hospital) based off an idea from Wan.

In the haunted house gone bad story (really, haunted houses very rarely end up good) Bello plays a police psychologist who arrives at the murder scene  of five college students whose night ghost hunting in an old house goes horribly, horribly wrong. The lone survivor says the house itself is responsible for the bloodbath. Sounds reasonable to me.

Bello's long list of credits include roles in A History of Violence, Assault on Precinct 13, and Downloading Nancy. Production is set to begin in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in January.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Even if it’s from outer space.

Jason R. Miller is teaming up with Dark Sky Films to write and direct the sci-fi thriller, Unidentified. This is Miller’s first time in the director’s chair but he is no stranger to the genre, having co-produced and worked as second unit director on both Hatchet 2 and Frozen.

Here’s the synopsis via Dark Sky:

The movie is an original mix of sci-fi-thriller and horror. During a wild weekend in Las Vegas, four young friends get into trouble with a loan shark and must skip town in a hurry. But gambling problems may be the least of their worries after they get stranded in the Nevada desert. One of the guys discovers a mysterious metal fragment, then promptly goes missing during the night. When the remaining three catch up with their lost friend, there's something different about him. As his condition worsens, the others realize that something unearthly might be stalking them in the desert.

Hatchet star Parry Shen has joined the cast along with Colton Dunn (Key and Peele), Eddie Mui (Call Back) and Eric Artell (Pair of Kings). Check out the first stills which include images of dudes acting all kinds of stupid in Sin City and what appears to be an oozing alien egg.

Nothing says “Happy Birthday,” “Congratulations,” or “You’re special to me.” like Black Metal.

Dark & Somber Greetings is a card company that specializes in messages for the more gloomy among us. Or, as they put it, for “thousands of misanthropic creatures who can at last feel comfortable sending a birthday card, or holiday message to one of their patron demons or family members.”

Each card is the diabolical creation of photographer/entrepreneur Courtney Frystak and illustrator/designer/musician Farron Loathing. They are 5x7, come with a black envelope, and run about $5 each, depending on where you buy them.

"It Is Time To Celebrate the Quickening of Your Death" Inside reads:  "It's Your Birthday!"

"Life is meaningless. Death is the only truth and the only absolution..." Inside reads:  “Get Well Soon

You can also make custom greetings for any of the unforgettably bleak moments in your life - marriage, new baby, graduation - you may want to commemorate.

As if Stephen King didn't have enough on his plate, now he is doing musicals. Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is a collaboration between King, John Mellencamp, and T Bone Burnett to bring to life a story inspired by the tale of a deadly love triangle that took place on Mellencamp's property in Indiana.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is the story of two sets of brothers: ghosts Jack and Andy, dead from a murder/suicide; and their living nephews, Frank and Drake, who "appear to be headed toward the same downward spiral as their uncles."

With a libretto (essentially, the script) by Stephen King, the 17 tracks on the "blues n' roots" recording include performances by Kris Kristofferson, Roseanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Neko Case, and John Mellencamp, with dialogue clips fromactors Meg Ryan, Matthew McConaughey, and Samantha Mathis. The recording will be available on March 13th 2013 as a standard edition (complete soundtrack, dialog excerpts and digital libretto) or deluxe edition (complete soundtrack - with and without dialog, deluxe art work, handwritten lyrics, specially printed libretto and the "Making of Ghost Brothers" mini-documentary DVD. Ghost Brothers of Darkland County digital editions for tablets, smartphones and e-readers will also be available.

Check Out The "Gore Factor" In This 'The Collection' Featurette

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really looking forward to The Collection. The first movie was a taut little thriller in the vein of Michael Mann's Thief crossed with the Saw movies; not surprising considering writing duo Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton scripted 4 of those Saw sequels. The follow-up, The Collection looks like it ups the ante in every possible way. And just when I couldn't get more excited for the flick, we get this cool behind-the-scenes featurette titled "Gore Factor" that gives us a look at the killer opening for the movie. Director Dunstan had me at, "we had to eviscerate 236 people" when talking about the club sequence teased at in this clip. You'll have to check this one out for yourself!

On top of this clip, there's also a "Collect You Friends" app that's been launched via Facebook where you can select five of your friends and use parts of them to assemble a gruesome scene that would make the Collector proud. The Collection stars Josh Stewart, Emma Fitzpatrick & Christopher McDonald and opens on November 30th.

Zombies Get Brainy in Upcoming Large Hadron Collider Movie 'Decay'

$

When the Large Hadron Collider (the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator) was built last decade, there were concerns (mostly from doomsday soothsayers and anti-science nuts) that it could open up a black hole and swallow up everything on Earth. No one worried about zombies.

But maybe they should have. A group of physics students (led by writer/director Luke Thompson) are working on a film entitled Decay, about a malfunction in the LHC that causes those working in the lab to become zombies. Super nerdy, I know, but what is cool is that the good people at CERN (the lab that hosts the LHC) let the students shoot in the actual Large Hadron Collider and the surrounding laboratory. CERN does not endorse or sponsor the film, but they might be the coolest bunch of scientists ever.

The movie doesn't look great. Shot by people who have never shot a movie before, and done on a respectable budget of about $3,000, Decay is a flick that benefits from an awesome setting and unique backstory that you can pretty much guarantee no one else will be able to duplicate.

Decay will be available to watch online for free when it is done. In the meantime, check out the trailer and keep up-to-date at DecayFilm.com

Davey Suicide: 'Put Your Trust in Suicide'– EP Review

$

This past spring, I interviewed industrial rocker Davey Suicide about his new band (he had previously recorded as a solo act) and his own successful clothing line Killers Never Die, which features deconstructed shirt designs with artwork that blends images of celebrity, death and horror. We also posted his debut music video for the band's first single “Generation Fuck Star,” with acclaimed video director/photographer Chad Michael Ward behind the camera, Davey portraying the leader of a new musical rebellion (which he says we should take quite literally), and ending with the words “To Be Continued.” Davey clued us in on that continuation and left us with the cryptic words “Unless we kill ourselves, there is no ceiling for what we are capable of. Put your trust in suicide.” From those cryptic words came the title of the band's new EP. While the forthcoming full-length album is complete, the release date has been pushed back a bit, so for now we have a spicy appetizer to whet our appetites.

Put Your Trust in Suicide is a short but intense collection of roof-raising anthems, which includes the original version of “Generation Fuck Star” as well as a remix version with puts stronger emphasis on meaty power chords, jittery electronics and samples (including occasional porn moans) and a more talk-sung verse style from Davey. The original focuses more on a gritty rhythmic undercurrent of shrill guitar chords and synth pulses, topped with solid mid-range industrial riffs. Davey's vocals here are reminiscent of '80s raunch-rock debauchery, but with a more threatening, snarling edge. It may be a modern rock 'n' roll call to arms, but the approach is more guerrilla-style subversion than a flag-waving march to glory.

The influence of early Nine Inch Nails sweeps right in at the intro of “Grab a Gun Hide Your Morals,” sounding almost exactly like the opening rapid-fire white noise blasts & frantic drumbeats of “Wish,” but gives way to a simple but effective dirty riff that underscores Davey's militant cries of “Grab a gun and kill everyone,” interspersed with a slimy electro thread that will tingle your short hairs even as you pump your fist in response. Compared to the previous violent battle cries, “Kids of America” carries a more refined message of rebellion, beginning with a Carnival of Souls feel (including a circus calliope and the sound of laughing children) and slipping in a throbbing electro rhythm and guttural spoken verses before busting into the catchy chorus of “We want it all, we want it now.”

While I'm still hanging on for the finished album, I'm digging the raw, uncluttered and relentless fury that drives these tracks. I anticipate more variety among the remaining album material, which should provide some counter-balance to the ferocity on display here, because an album of nothing but breathlessly rage-fueled anthems could become exhausting... but there's enough hints of diversity, particularly in Davey's vocal approach, to suggest there will be more emotional colors to come. For now, this one proves this band should have no problem amping up a huge audience.

By the way, if you missed the video for “Generation Fuck Star,” check it out here!

Ebay seller popsfartberger sells some awesome, vintage-style action figures from some of our favorite films and franchises like Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Jaws, The Evil Dead, and The Thing. But wait, you don't remember Dawn of the Dead zombie "action" figures when you were a kid? That's because these are neo-vintage.

Popsfartberger doesn't say a whole lot on his eBay storefront, but it appears that he makes his own mini action figures, then seals them up in vintage-style blister packs. The toys are not cheap, running $24.95 to $59.95, but they sure are cool.

American Horror Story: Asylum Episode 205
“I Am Anne Frank, Part 2”
Written By: Brad Falchuk
Directed By: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
Original Airdate: 14 November 2012

In This Episode...

Sister Jude goes to see Mr. Goodman, a Holocaust survivor who is now a Nazi hunter. She asks him to look into Dr. Arden. When she returns to Briarcliff, a man named Mr. Brown is there to collect his wife. According to Mr. Brown (I didn’t catch his first name) his wife is the woman who came in, claiming to be Anne Frank. Her name is Charlotte Brown (nee Cohen), they have an infant son named David, and his crying seems to have literally driven her crazy. Dr. Thredson overhears and suggests Anne is suffering from postpartum psychosis. Mr. Brown assures Sister Jude that time with her loving family will help her. Anne doesn’t remember any of this, until Brown produces a photo of the happy family. But a few days later, Mr. Brown returns his wife to Briarcliff. She has gotten worse and tried to suffocate the baby. Dr. Arden runs into Mr. Brown and offers a cure: a lobotomy. He agrees and the lobotomy is a “success.” Anne/Charlotte becomes the perfect Stepford wife, throwing away her obsessive collection of Nazi news clippings. Before we fade out, we zoom in on a photo of Hitler and some of his SS. The officer standing directly behind Der Fuhrer is Mr. Brown.

Dr. Thredson promises Lana that tonight is the night he sneaks her out of Briarcliff. At 6pm, he distracts the guard and the two simply walk out to his car. It was too easy. Thredson takes her back to his place because when it is discovered she is missing, her house is the first place people will look. Lana grows more and more uneasy. She excuses herself to the bathroom but goes into the wrong room: it is a workshop. An Ed Gein-style workshop, complete with human bones and skin. Thredson sneaks up on her, and pushes a button. The trapdoor floor gives away, and Lana falls through. She wakes in a Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-type killing room, chained to the floor. There is another body there. She crawls to it, turns it over - it is Wendy, very dead and very frozen.

Also: Arden threatens to sue Sister Jude for allowing the attack under her watch. Sister Jude is convinced she is done, so she puts on a tight dress and high heels, picks up a man in a bar, and goes to bed with him, sneaking out before he wakes. After Arden was shot, Sister Eunice (still possessed, I assume) sneaked into his lab to “dispose of” Shelly before Sister Jude found her. She doesn’t do a very good job, for some school children find her at the bottom of the stairs in a dark corner of their playground. Kit is given a reprieve from sterilization, as long as he continues with his treatment by admitting to what he did on tape, then listening to it, to make it more real. Thredson turns this recording over to the police, who arrest Kit. Grace does not get a reprieve. The night before her sterilization she is abducted by the same aliens that took Kit. Alma is there, naked and pregnant, telling her it will hurt less if she doesn’t fight. Grace doesn’t listen and the aliens slit her stomach. When Kit finds her in the common room the next day (just before the police arrest him) she is bleeding between her legs.

Dig It or Bury It?

I feel a little embarrassed, but it wasn’t until this episode that I figured out that Thredson was really Bloody Face. I mean, it was early on, when he made Kit record his confession so he could “hear it,” but usually I pride myself in figuring these things out quicker. What I did see coming was Anne Frank’s husband being a Nazi. The moment he walked in to Briarcliff, he seemed suspicious.

I am impressed with this season. Season one got more and more insane as it went on, but season two, honestly, keeps getting better. Even the more ridiculous plot points, like the alien stuff, is handled in such a way that feels organic (to this story, anyway) and properly fleshed out.

Patient History

According to Mr. Brown, Charlotte has always had an unnatural obsession with the WWII concentration camps. Seeing a theatrical production of The Diary of Anne Frank when she was eight months pregnant seemed to push her over the edge and she began to believe she was Anne Frank. Things got worse after she had the baby, who was colicky and cried all the time. She ignored him, instead obsessing over the concentration camp children who she needed to save. She herself was never in the camps - her inmate tattoo was self-inflicted.

Bloody Face

Again, no “modern day” Bloody Face attacks. Thank goodness. Linking Bloody Face to Ed Gein and even more to Leatherface, BF has a lamp made of human skin (complete with nipples) and a mint bowl made of a hollowed-out skull.

Prophecies?

A mysterious little girl shows up at Briarcliff, and Bloody Face gets an origin story.

It’s pretty great; watch it below.

Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of a kabillion Twi-hards weeping sparkly tears as Breaking Dawn: Part 2 opens late tonight and the Twilight Saga comes to a close. And that sound behind the weeping? It’s the sound of their (mostly) boyfriends and husbands cheering the demise of Team Edward and Team Jacob.

The Twilight Saga is so much a part of the pop-cultural landscape it’s hard to imagine what can possibly fill the void in our hearts and our Tumblrs once it’s over. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of brooding, bad wigs, longing looks and speculation. Before you head into the theater for the final installment you might want a refresher course on key points from the the earlier films. Jason Jack Miller's 'Hellbender' Finds Magic and Murder in the Mountains

$
0
0

Family feuds are a huge part of the history and folklore of this country. The Hatfield and McCoy families alone have accounted for endless books, television shows and punch lines. People outside the feuds may see them as pointless and silly, but to those deeply entangled in them, they are a matter of life and death. They often start over matters like a piece of land or a broken relationship; important things, yes, but usually not worth the violence, heartbreak and bloodshed that stains their names for years and generations to follow.

Henry Collins is more than happy to stay out of the flap that's tied his family to the Lewis clan for longer than he can remember. He's fuzzy on the details - somebody in his family ended up with something that a Lewis wanted once upon a time - but he's not sure that waiting around for the feud to catch up with him is the right choice for his future. And once his sister, Jane, turns up dead under mysterious circumstances, he's sure it's not.

Unfortunately, as Henry is about to learn, running out on family - whether it's yours or the one that wants you dead - is easier said than done.

Jason Jack Miller's Hellbender is an engrossing, engaging novel about the power of family, and the way the person you are is informed deeply by the people who brought you up. It's also about a classic family feud, a bloody struggle played out deep in the Appalachian mountains where the law doesn't quite reach and where the weapons are fists, bullets, and a handful of ancient magic.

Henry understands the bullets and the fists, even though he wants no part of them. He's less sure about the magic, the rites and spells that are deeply ingrained in the area's culture, kept alive mostly by the women who hand them down from generation to generation. He dismisses it all as superstition, even as unexplainable events begin to pile up around him.

These events, along with a handful of more traditional intimidation tactics, are the Lewis bunch’s way of slowly tightening the noose around Henry Collins’s neck. The fact that he wants no part of their beef and played no part in the original grudge means nothing to them. He’s a Collins, and he must be dealt with.

Miller plunges us deep into the story with a slow but steady reveal of the history between the two families. He also plunges into the beautiful, mysterious region that is the book’s backdrop – the chops he honed co-writing an outdoor travel guide come into serious play here. The book is peppered with long passages describing the mountains, trails and valley where the events play out. In less skillful hands these passages would have brought the book to a screeching halt, but in Hellbender they serve as welcome, refreshing pauses in the action.

Appalachian magic is faithfully depicted as well. There are no Harry Potter-style standoffs with wands and broomsticks. Instead, it’s ancient words scratched in the dust, and songs carried forth on the mountain air, and hair in your pockets and thistles in your hand. It’s not flashy, but it is captivating and honest and it all feels very, very real.

Miller clearly has confidence in his voice and style, and in the story he came to tell. He cuts no corners and makes no compromises, resulting in a thoughtful book that requires – and rewards – your patience.

Order Hellbender from Raw Dog Screaming Press.
