FX Wants You To Spread The Infection

Because you can only "Dead Yourself" so many times, right?

FX’s newest hit series, The Strain, from acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro and executive producer Carlton Cuse, has a warning for the general public: They may be infected with The Strain.
The Strain Transformation app is available as a free download in the iTunes and Google Play stores. Fans can discover what will happen when an ancient parasitic plague enters their system and transforms them into a monstrous vampire. From examination to diagnosis, they’ll see their transformation in seconds. The app enables the infected to quickly share photos of their results on Facebook and Twitter to inform and warn their friends of the spreading infection. It offers exclusive video and access to The Strain social media, including the official Strain Facebook and Twitter pages..

FX worked with the agency Neo-Pangea to execute the Transformation App experience.
The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
The ensemble cast of The Strain stars Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland, Miguel Gomez and David Bradley. Writer, producer, director and novelist Guillermo del Toro has built his career on bringing fantasy and horror to vivid life. He wrote and directed the dark fairy tale Pan’s Labyrinth, which garnered six Academy Award nominations, including one for del Toro for Best Writing, Original Screenplay. The film went on to win three Oscars®. Named by The Hollywood Reporter as a “Master of Horror,” del Toro’s other film credits include Pacific Rim, Hellboy and the upcoming Crimson Peak starring Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Chastain.

New Trailer for Leprechaun: Origins

$

It has been well over a year and a half since the Leprechaun rebootprequel was announced and since then we have been given a clip and a first trailer, but we had not yet had even a glimpse of Dylan Postl (AKA Hornswaggle) as the titular character.  Well, that has all changed.  Lionsgate and WWE have released this official image and a new trailer.  But they are a bit confusing:

The reason I say the new design is confusing is that Postl and director Zach Lipovsky have been making the rounds down in Comic con and telling everyone  that, while darker and scarier than its predecessors, this is the origin story for the Leprechaun portrayed by Warwick Davis.  So that begs the question, how does what looks like the love child of Pumpkinhead and Sam reconcile, both in appearance and behavior, with the little guy we know from 6 previous films?
I guess we shall find out in a month.  Leprechaun hits VOD on August 26, 2014 and Blu-ray and DVD September 30th.

An Evil Dead TV Series? Maybe

During the Screen Gems Panel this morning at Comic Con, Sam Raimi, who was there to promote a Last of Us movie, dropped another bit of surprise news.  He is currently writing an Evil Dead TV show and it will involve Bruce Campbell (whatever that means).

That's it.  No more details.

A prequel? Bridge the 3rd and 4th films? Pick up where the last film left off?  Please feel free to speculate wildly as to what the show will be about in the comments.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Deadpool Test Footage Finds Its Way Online

Anyone familiar with the character of Deadpool knows that version that ended up on screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was an abomination.  As bad as he was, it had nothing to do with the actor portryaing him, Ryan Reynolds. So when talk of a Deadpool movie featuring Reynolds, based on a screenplay buy Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland) that brought the 4th wall breaking charchter to life just as he is in the comics, it was reason to get excited. (Like this footage, that script also leaked years ago and is still fairly accessible online.)

The script, that everyone loved, had one issue in the minds of Fox studio heads, it was an R rated superhero movie. They commisioned a screen test using the opening scene of the film. Reynolds came in for the motion capture and recorded the dialog.  The test footage has just come online (for now) and you can watch it below.

WIll this ever get made?  I certainly hope so.

A Final Farewell to FEARnet

$
0
0

You may or may not know this, but as of July 30th, FEARNET will shut its doors forever. In April, Comcast NBCUniversal bought out FEARNET. Because NBCUniversal already has Chiller and Syfy, it was decided that FEARNET was redundant.  Most of the staff was laid off then, with a skeleton crew kept around to help with the transition.

I have worked at FEARNET for the last six years - the last two full-time as associate editor - and it has been the most formative experience of my life. It would drive my husband crazy because I would work non-stop - but when it was all said and done, he told me that he never heard me complain. Not once. I loved this job. I will continue writing about horror. Currently I am writing for Shock Till You Drop, and I have some stuff in the works for Fangoria. I am currently working on a book about Friday the 13th: The Series. It is my favorite television show of all time, and am getting brand new interviews with the cast and crew.

All of us at FEARNET did it because we loved it. We love horror, and we were given an amazing outlet to work in. Network president Peter Block is a gregarious man who always had time for a conversation about the newest horror flicks and what I was watching on TV this week (it was usually everything). Editor-in-chief Lawrence Raffel has ruined me for other job. As a boss, he never said "no" to an idea I pitched, and he was always there to help flesh out ideas. As a friend, he was always there with a sarcastic quip and an open ear. I believe that I will always remain good friends with our brilliant editorial staff, Rob Galluzzo, Greg Burkart, John Squires, Scott Weinberg and Chris Connors, and with our amazing video staff, Rhianne Paz Bergado, Kyle Van Vonderen, Ben Koppin, and Jaclyn Kabble.

I don't know why Chiller did not decide to bring in the FEARNET team. With the talents of both networks working as one, we could have made an enormous impact on the television landscape. No matter how many horror flicks dominate the box office, and no matter how high the ratings are on genre TV, no one ever wants to take a chance on the horror genre. I don't know that it will make any difference, but it certainly couldn't hurt to send an email to the good people at Chiller and let them know how much you enjoyed the FEARNET web experience.

Finally, a huge amount of thanks must go out to you, the readers. You were such a great audience to write for. You truly love horror as much as we do, and you showed it with kind, thoughtful, and insightful comments. We literally could not have done FEARNET without your clicks, your likes, your comments, and your shares.

WHY ‘THE PURGE: ANARCHY’ IS THE MOST IMPORTANT HORROR FILM OF 2014

$
0
0

I like to think that I’m a rather easy-going theatregoer. If people audibly respond to what’s happening on screen, I can easily tune it out and focus on the film at hand. However, I could hear the increasingly louder breaths of frustration from the older couple as the film progressed. With about 15 minutes left to spare until the credits roll, one of the more climactic events occurred that solidified THE PURGE: ANARCHY‘s message of “down with the rich-white folks” and the older white couple behind me had had enough. The two stood up and walked out cursing and mumbling under their breath. I couldn’t make out exactly what they said, but something about “bullshit,” “Obama,” “guns,” and some racial slurs definitely came out. I’ve never seen a film outside of a Biblical story invoke such anger out of someone as they left the theatre, and that’s when it was all solidified for me. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but THE PURGE: ANARCHY is the most important film of 2014.
