Bizarre Educational Filmstrip From The '60s

We have covered PSA's on here before.  They usually are usually take the scared straight approach and can be disturbingly effective.  Old grade School educational filmstrips on the other hand were usually just wholesome to the point of being silly in their approach to teach a lesson.  Today I came across a one that is truly bizarre.  It is a bicycle safety video from 1963 titled 'One Got Fat'.  The video sees children, dressed as chimps acting like children, riding their bikes to a picnic.  One by one the monkey-children have horrible accidents due to their failure to obey proper bicycle safety.  That is all except for one. He makes it to the picnic where he eats everyone’s food and gets fat.

Gory New Body Horror 'Eat' Has A Trailer

We have the new sales trailer for the gory body horror ‘Eat’, currently being shopped around at the Cannes Film Market.  The film marks the first feature from Colorado based group known as Pretty People Pictures.  While this is their first feature, the group is familiar with body horror as can be seen in the short film Incubator (available in our shorts section)

Synopsis:

Novella McClure is like most struggling actresses in Los Angeles: she's in her early 30s, her fake name sounded cooler ten years ago, and she hasn't landed a role in three years. To top it all off, she’s developed a disturbing habit of eating her own flesh. Novella desperately tries to hide her strange condition from her motherly landlord, Eesha, and somewhat psychopathic best friend, Candice, but her body and mind continue to deteriorate in the depressing world of failed auditions and sketchy night clubs. Can a romantic relationship with her psychiatrist prevent her from self destruction? Or will her fatal habit continue to eat away at her?

Fans of the body horror have been seeing a recent surge in quality entries into that sub-genre with the likes of Contracted, Afflicted, Thanatomophose, and Antiviral. Perhaps we will be adding Eat to that list soon.

Tour Russia's Abandoned Plague Fort

Off the coast of St. Petersburg, Russian in the Gulf of Finland sits the abandoned Fort Alexander.  The fort was built in the mid-1800s to protect the waterway around the then capital city. Though never involved in direct military action, it was used for strategic purposes such as setting up mine fields and ammunition storage.

As the 1900s approached, the Russian government found another useful purpose for the fort.  Given its isolated location, it would become the ideal base for bacterial research for the newly formed Institute for Experimental Medicine (tell me that doesn’t sound ominous).  Fort Alexander was renovated, creating research laboratories, a science library, animal enclosures for camel & reindeer (you need test subjects), and a crematorium (you need to dispose of your test subjects).  The main focus for the new facility was the study of the plague and the creation of a vaccine.  It was because of this focus that it earned the nickname “The Plague Fort”.  They also worked on other diseases such as cholera, tetanus, typhus and Streptococcus.  When the Communist Party took over Russia in 1917 operations were terminated at the fort and moved to the mainland.

The fort spend time during the rest of the 1900s as storage facility and repair shop but was completely abandoned in the early ‘80s.  In the late ‘90s and early ‘00s it became a popular location for raves.

Concentrate On This Helmet, "The Isolator"

With finals coming up for many colleges and high schools, being able to focus on you studies is critical.  Well, you are in luck. There is a device that is just perfect for your quest for academic greatness.  May I present The Isolator.

This creepy little beauty is designed to ensure optimal concentration by blocking out all sound and limiting your vision to a small horizontal slit that will focus your vision on one line of text at a time.  The helmet comes equipped with an oxygen tank so you can, you know, breath.

If this looks like something out of a science fiction story that George McFly would be reading in Back to the Future, there may be a good reason for that. The helmet was designed in 1925 by Hugo Gernsback, an inventor but also considered “The Father of Science Fiction” for his publishing work (Wonder Stories).  Even the annual awards given for literary achievements in science fiction or fantasy are named for him; the Hugo Awards

Leigh Whannell Set To Write & Direct Insidious 3

Director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) took to twitter earlier today to announce who would be at the helm for the next instalment of the Insidious franchise.  And that person is frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell.

This did not come as surprise to me, mainly because I was certain this had been announced a long time ago.  I did a little digging figured out it was because our movie review, Scott Weinberg, had “announced” it back in October.

Anyway, we now know Whannell (AKA Specs) is actually directing and not just Scott's pick. I am as happy now with this pick as I was in October. Sure this is his directorial debut, but he has been working side by side with James Wan for the last decade, so I have a fair amount of confidence he has picked up a thing or two.  Plus, he has written all 3 films so there is no need to worry about him not “getting” it.

The third film is said to be in the same vein as the first film, which will probably make the detractors of part two happy.  We will find in a little under a year from now, as the new film will begin shooting in July for an April 2015 release.

Sigh....it is with mixed emotions that I present the trailer for Alex de la Iglesia’s latest "WITCHING AND BITCHING".

Why do i sigh?  Because i truely enjoyed the first 20-30 minutes of Witching and Bitching when i saw it last year....then...well the movie changed, i didn't (or i stopped ignoring things)

Synopsis:

"When a bank heist in the city doesn’t all go according to plan, José and Tony find themselves in possession of some hostages and speeding through the mountains of Spain, hoping to quietly slip over the border. Not wanting to give up his custody days to his ex-wife, José has also brought his son along, for both the robbery and the ride. Little do they know that this is only the beginning of their troubles. When they decide to make a stop in a small tavern in the Basque countryside, the group encounters a series of local wackos. Falling victim to a mysterious spell, they soon find themselves the honored guests of a fractured family of witches who are preparing for an ancient ritual. More colorful characters begin to enter the picture, including a pair of hapless cops hot on the trail, a defecting vixen witch and José’s controlling ex-wife, and the situation spirals further out of control, heading towards a jaw-dropping climax.”

Back in 2011 FEARNET had the pleasure of bringing Todd and The Book of Pure Evil to the US. Well, it is a supernatural comedy featuring Jason Mewes ("Mallrats," "Clerks") that tells the story of a small-town high school kid trying to save the world. 'Snowpiercer' Gets A Red Band Trailer

There has been a lot of controvery behind the scenes regarding the US release of Bong Joon-ho's (The Host, Mother) first English language feature, Snowpiercer.  The release had been seemingly held up due to a battle over the cut of the film. The Weinstein Compnay, which is distributing the movie, reportedly wanted to remove 20-25 minutes, feeling that the movie would be "too slow" for the average American.   Well the dust has settled and it looks like we will be getting the Korean director's cut of the film.

Synopsis:

In a future where a failed global-warming experiment kills off most life on the planet, a class system evolves aboard the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe via a perpetual-motion engine.

The post apocalyptic thriller starring Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton hits US theaters June 27, 2014

Disney’s Frozen has been an international smash, which means that it was only a matter of time before people started making parodies and mash-ups at its expense.  We found one such video created by Bobby Burns on Youtube.  He took up the task of cutting a new trailer for the film in the style of a horror/thriller movie.  “Do you want to build a snowman?”

Everyone knows that LEGO’s are awesome, well except for those that think they are the “Tools of Satan”.  It seems like every time you turn around there is another awesome play set being proposed for movies such as Ghostbusters, Goonies, and Jurassic Park. But the Danish toy manufacturer just isn't prepared to put out the sets that we REALLY want. Cracked.com asked their readers to submit the playsets that they would like to see LEGO tackle next.  I pulled a select few, but head over to their site for all 36

Michael Dougherty Set To Direct Horror Comedy 'Krampus'

Will Christmas come before Halloween for Michael Dougherty?  The writer director of the fantastic Trick r’ Treat announced last fall that there would indeed be a sequel to that film, but Deadline is reporting that he now has another holiday themed film in the works.  Dougherty has signed a deal with Legendary, with whom he is doing TrT2, for the “twisted horror comedy” Krumpus.  The director said the following about what drew him to the project

“The dark ancient origins of our holidays have always fascinated me.  I’ve been drawing twisted Christmas cards for well over a decade, so it only made sense to bring some of that morbid yuletide fun to the big screen, and Krampus was the perfect mythology to do that. Christmas has been invading Halloween for far too long. It’s time to return the favor.”

We can attest to his twisted sense of humor when it comes to Christmas. He and Zach Shields (co-writter on Krumpus) created the following Christmas spots for us a couple of years ago.

There is no word on which project will actually come first, but it sounds like Krampus already has a script, while Trick R’ Treat 2 was still being worked on last we heard.  So we may have a bit longer to wait until we see Sam again on the big screen.

Is This Man The Worst Dating Show Contestant Ever?

$

This is one of those stories that is simply too crazy to not be true.   A Turkish man, Sefer Calinak, was recently on the dating show The Luck of the Draw. While going through his past relationships, a few interesting tidbits were revealed.  See, he had murdered two woman.

Victim number 1 was his first wife.  She was also his cousin. Her family had tried to force her to may a widower. The two eloped to stop this from happening.  She moved in with him and his family for 5 months when according to Sefer "Her behavior changed. The nephew of the man who wanted to marry her started to come to our village. I was jealous and I killed her, in a way".  He served 4 years of a 13 year sentence.

After his release, he married again and had two children, but then separated.  Lucky her.

Victim number 2 was a married woman he was having an affair with. She had promised to leave her husband for him, but changed her mind.  This lead to a heated argument that required Calinak to “defend” himself with an ax.  "I killed her after she tried to kill me," he said. "She was accidentally killed when I swung the ax."

Sefer Calinak believes that all that has happened to him is bad luck, stating he was a “honest person looking for a new wife” and “In spite of everything, I still want to get married.”

UK Apartment Building Has Bleeding Walls

Bleeding Walls are generally something you'd only expect to see in a horror movie but for residents of one apartment building in Leicester, England it is happening in real life.  This isn’t another Amityville Horror, however, the actual cause is just as unsettling.  Cannibal rats.

It seems that the building is infested with rats. They have made a home in the attic and walls of the building. And while unhygienic as the infestation is on its own, they also seem to have a nasty habit of eating their young.  The blood from the cannibalized vermin seeps through the holes they have chewed and oozes out.

The tenants are looking to be relocated, but a Leicester City Council spokesman said: “We are continuing investigations to establish the cause of the problem.’’

This isn't the first time we have heard about cannibal rats. Earlier this year we learned of the ghost ship Lyubov Orlova that was also teaming with the rodents.

This Famous Castle Could Be Yours

One of the most famous residences in the world (and literature) is potentially for sale, if the price is right.

Bran Castle, or as it is commonly referred to Dracula's Castle, in Romania’s Transylvanian mountains may be looking for a buyer.   In the 1920’s the fortress became an offcial residence for the British royal family but was seized by the communists in 1948.  After some legal back and forth, it was returned to the family in 2006 and is now in the possession of Queen Marie’s grandchildren.

Archduke Dominic and his sisters Maria-Magdalena Holzhausen and Elisabet Sandhofer, all in their 70’s, are looking at what is best for the future of the castle.  They have taken good care of the site but, in their advanced years, are unsure if they have the time or money to truly turn the location into a prime tourist destination.  They envision a hotel on site, underground attractions, and a new road leading to the estate.  What they want is to sell to someone committed to these goals, bringing Dracula's castle into the 21st century.

Reports that they offered to sell the site back to the Romanian government for $79 million have not been confirmed but if you are interested that’s probably the ballpark you are looking at.

A Giant Bunny Lives In the Italian Alps

$

The creepiest rabbit we have seen this side of Frank from Donnie Darko; this 200 foot long, 20 foot high, handmade, stuffed bunny sits in the Italian Alps.  Why? The artist collective known as Gelatin put “Hase” there for you to visit while it slowly decays.  Here is the full explanation in their own words:

"The things one finds wandering in a landscape: familiar things and utterly unknown, like a flower one has never seen before, or, as Columbus discovered, an inexplicable continent; and then, behind a hill, as if knitted by giant grandmothers, lies this vast rabbit, to make you feel as small as a daisy. The toilet-paper-pink creature lies on its back: a rabbit-mountain like Gulliver in Lilliput. Happy you feel as you climb up along its ears, almost falling into its cavernous mouth, to the belly-summit and look out over the pink woolen landscape of the rabbitÌs body, a country dropped from the sky; ears and limbs sneaking into the distance; from its side flowing heart, liver and intestines.
Happily in love you step down the decaying corpse, through the wound, now small like a maggot, over woolen kidney and bowel.
Happy you leave like the larva that gets its wings from an innocent carcass at the roadside. Such is the happiness which made this rabbit. I love the rabbit the rabbit loves me.

After almost 5 years of knitting the rabbit found its final place in the italian alps (close to Cuneo). It waits there to be visited by you. You might even take your time or check back every now and then as the rabbit will wait for you 20 years from now on."

Placed on Colletto Fava in the Piedmont region of Italy in 2005, "Hase" has most certainly began to decay.  Check out the gallery of photos from the last 9 years.

Fox and M. Night Shyamalan have teamed up on what can best be described as a "Twin Peaks-esque" mystery thriller, Wayward Pines. Shyamalan is on board as executive producer as well as directing the first two episodes. He does not appear to be involved in the scripting, at least beyond his input as exec producer.

The cast is quite strong; Starring Academy Award Nominee's Matt Dillon, Juliette Lewis, and Terrence Howard, along with Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo, and rounded out by Toby Jones and Carla Cugino.

Synopsis:

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan's investigation only turns up more questions. What's wrong with Wayward Pines? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

The 10 part event series will air sometime in 2015.
