Marvel Studios has named the director for their upcoming Dr. Strange film and he has strong ties to the horror genre.
Scott Derrickson will be at the helm of the upcoming film, which does not have an official release date but will likely be one of the unnamed films Marvel plans for July 8, 2016 or May 5, 2017. Derrickson is best known for The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Sinister. He also has Deliver Us From Evil hitting theaters July 2nd.
For those unfamiliar with the character of Dr. Strange, he is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.
It has been rumored in the past the the film would see Strange taking on Dormammu whose list of abilities include body possession, resurrection of the dead, and creating demon lords. So if this turns out to be the case, we should be looking at the darkest Marvel movie to date and it explains the choice of a director familiar with horror.
