Back in January we told you about the push to erect a 7 foot tall concrete goat-headed Baphomet outside of Oklahoma’s State Capital. Well we have an update to that story.
A quick recap of what is actually going on here. Back in 2009, the government of Oklahoma allowed a monument of the Ten Commandments to be placed on the Capital’s steps. Its placement there caused a bit of an uproar but has been defended under the First Amendment. In response, a group calling themselves The Satanic Temple raised money to construct the concrete structure mentioned above. While the placement of the statue has not been approved (the application was submitted, but approvals have been suspended while a legal battle continues of the Commandant monument), construction is under way, and they are giving us a look at how it is progressing.
The completed Baphomet will sit under the pentagram flanked by the two small children. It will all be encased in bronze.
When asked what the goal of the monument is, Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves had the following to say:
“The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures. The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.”
