Don't be misled by the sweet, innocent-sounding name “Indigo Rose”... this new hybrid tomato strain is totally metal.

Oddity Central recently showcased the new variety, which is described as “jet black on the outside and juicy purple-red on the inside.” They also point out that the ultra-dark color scheme not only looks cool, but also indicates a fruit which is rich in powerful antioxidants – particularly anthocyanin, shown to be beneficial in the prevention of ailments like diabetes. Anthocyanin results in a purple pigment (it also gives blueberries their deep purple color), which when mixed with the usual red results in a solid black exterior.

The first black tomatoes were reportedly grown by Professor Jim Myers at the University of Oregon. “It is the first improved tomato variety in the world that has anthocyanins in its fruit,” Myers explains. “It will lead to a better understanding on how the antioxidants express in tomatoes and may contribute to human health.” He also adds that the Indigo Rose is very tasty, with a less sweet flavor that makes it ideal for salads.
That's all good news, of course, but now I want to see Myers and his colleagues breed lots more jet-black vegetables, so I can whip up the most awesome party tray in the history of everything. And for dessert... I call a road trip to Dawn of the Donut!
