Thousands More Cars Recalled for Spider-Related Defects

Remember our story last year about Toyota and Mazda's recall of several hundred thousand vehicles due to a dangerous flaw involving spiders? Well, it seems the arachnid auto invasion has just entered Phase 2.

According to CNN, Mazda has informed federal officials that 42,000 Mazda6 sedans, from years 2010 through 2012, are being recalled due to a potential fire hazard that could result from little buggers making nests in the car's fuel system.

It seems a species known as the yellow sac spider is actually attracted to gasoline vapors (as if its name wasn't creepy enough), and likes to weave its web in the fuel tank hose, causing an air blockage that can lead to pressure cracks in the tank itself.

A mechanical modification introduced in 2011 (the first spider-related recall) didn't offer enough defense against the industrious critters, so Mazda developed a software solution to relieve the pressure on the tank. CNN also reports that pre-2012 Mazda6 owners will be able to bring their vehicles into dealerships later this month to get the software installed.
