Old school horror fans were amazed (and delighted) this year when NECA rolled out two action figures based on the oddly-tinted renditions of horror icons Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger from Nintendo's NES game system in the early '90s. It's another sign of a nostalgic revolution sweeping through the horror community – a trend that has inspired creative artists and designers to come up with their own “what-if” concepts, like these awesome NES game mockups based on Italian horror movies from Dr. Terror's Blog of Horrors.
The Doctor is in again, along with another of our favorite blogs, Freddy in Space (helmed by regular FEARnet contributor John Squires), to provide more 8-bit dream projects we'd love to see in reality: this time, a pair of figures based on lo-fi vintage horror games that you may remember (or may not, as some of these games got a very limited release).
Working once again with talented artist/designer Frank Browning, Freddy in Space came up with two figures based on the Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre game cartridges designed for the Atari 2600 system by Wizard Video Games in the early '80s. Both feature reproductions of the original game box art.
Doc Terror took a more lo-fi approach and created LEGO versions, since the building blocks came closest to replicating the games' very basic graphic renditions of Michael and Leatherface (without the box art as a guide, players wouldn't know which was which).
